The Editor's language localization feature enables support for different languages in your Meridian-powered app.
The Language settings don't change the language used by the Editor user interface.
List of Supported Languages
The following languages are supported:
- British English
- Simplified Chinese
- Traditional Chinese
Language Localization Overview
Meridian's language localization supports languages at the device level. If one of your visitors has their device set to use Spanish and you have enabled Spanish support in the Editor, your Meridian app on their device will be in Spanish.
If a visitor has their device set to Spanish and you haven't enabled Spanish support, it will use your default language. If you've set your default language to English, it will show English if a visitor's device is using an unsupported language.
For custom text in the Editor, it's important that it be entered in the Editor's current Editor Content Language. When content is entered in the Editor that's different from the Editor Content Language, it may prevent that content being indexed for search results in the Editor.
Change the Default Language
Complete these steps to change the default language in the Editor.
- In the Editor sidebar, click LANGUAGES.
- Click the Editor Content Language dropdown, and then choose the language you'd like as the default.
- Click Save.
Add a Supported Language
Complete these steps to add a new supported language.
- In the Editor sidebar, click LANGUAGES.
- Click the Translation Languages dropdown, and then choose a new supported language.
- Click Save.
Once you've added a supported language, the Translations tab provides several options for organizing and managing your translations in the Editor.
The FILTER BY LANGUAGE dropdown limits the translations by language.
The FILTER BY ENTITY TYPE dropdown limits the translations by the KIND column in the translation table.
The Show Only Partial Translations checkbox limits the translations to those currently lacking a translation.
The Show Only Unreviewed Translations checkbox limits the translation to those that haven't been reviewed in the Editor.
To make an unreviewed translation reviewed, click the Edit button next to a translation, make any edits you need to make, and then click Save.
Complete but unreviewed translations will still be used in the Meridian-powered apps.
The KIND column are directly related to the items listed in the FILTER BY ENTITY TYPE dropdown.
The NAME column is the name of each entity being translated.
The LANGUAGE column shows the language code being used by each entity.
The UNREVIEWED column shows yes when a translated string is unreviewed, and no when it has been reviewed.
The COMPLETE column shows no when an entity has an empty translation field, and yes when it does.
Exporting and Importing Translations
Although it's possible to manage all of your translations on the Meridian Editor Languages page, for large numbers of translations this can be unwieldy. For large sets of translations, the Meridian Editor supports the exporting and importing of .po language files.
If you'd like to manage your translations externally, make sure that you export the translations file first. The Meridian Editor doesn't support importing language files that didn't originate from the Editor.
Export a Translation File
In order to export a translation file, you'll need to first add a supported language. Once you've done so, complete these steps to generate a .po language file to download.
- On the Languages page, click the Export tab.
- Click the Export button. The Meridian Editor will begin generating the translation files for all of the supported languages you've added to your location. NOTE: This may take a few minutes.
- When the translation files are ready, they'll appear as specific files to download.
- Click Download All to download all of the translations files at once.
After you've downloaded the translation files, you can edit the files in an editor of your choice.
When you edit the translation file, don't delete or add any content. Don't change the filename. Doing so may prevent the Editor from importing the file.
Import a Translation File
Once you've finished editing your translation file, complete these steps to import a translation file.
- On the Languages page, click the Import tab.
- Click the Choose File button.
- Locate the .po file on your computer.
- Click the Import button.
- The imported file appears in the Imported Files section when import is complete.
Issues with U.S. and British English
The Meridian Editor's search function is used to search for user created content in the Editor. This includes the search box at the top of the sidebar, as well as any field where you can add a link to a page, placemark, or event.
The search function searches for U.S. English content. When you enter non-U.S. English content in the Editor, the Editor's search won't find that content until it has an English translation. This includes British English content, which the Editor treats as a separate language.
For example, if you created a page with a Russian title, you wouldn't be able to add a link to that page in your Meridian app until you added a U.S. English translation for that Russian page title. Similarly, if you created a page using a British English title, you wouldn't be able to search for it in the Editor until you add a U.S. English translation for it even if the text appears to be identical.
